A few months ago I tried The Botanical Club at its first location, in Milan’s Isola. I returned there few evenings ago, this time at the newly open venue in Via Tortona, right behind the Navigli. The reasons for coming back were basically two: the desire for a properly made gin tonic and the one to try the poke, an amazing dish with Pacific origins. I fell in love with the place and I can’t wait to be back again!
Let’s start with the food. There are several inviting dishes on the menu, following the trend and the format of tapas. Small dishes at small prices to have with a cocktail or a glass of wine. There are gazpacho, creamed salted codfish croutons, crunchy octopus and thyme scallops, but also more complex proposals such as spaghetti with clams and sea urchins or black pepper lamb. Prices vary between 4 and 18 euros.
But the real innovation and the most appreciated surprise was the poke, a Hawaiian dish consisting in a sort of raw fish salad, fish that has been cut in cubes and marinated with several ingredients, and that can be accompanied by rice too. There are not many restaurants in Milan serving poke, but I am sure the news will spread quickly. The poke is a delicious and yet light dish that can be presented in many variations. There are several types of poke at The Botanical Club: I tried two half portions of octopus and teriyaki poke with seaweed and avocado and the salmon poke with mango and tangerine. They were both amazingly tasty, especially the octopus one. You end up spending 15 euros and feeling full and sated.
Try it and make sure you have a gin tonic on the side. The Botanical Club, in addition to being a bar and a restaurant is also a little distillery and presents several cocktails on the menu, especially amazing gin tonics!
The Botanical Club is located both in Milan’s Isola district, in Via Pastrengo, and close to the Navigli, in Via Tortona in front of the Mudec. Either way, since these areas are bustiling, we suggest getting there by metro, respectively at the lillac line Isola stop and the green line Porta Genova stop.
Both venues are pretty fashionable: nice interior, dimmed lights, ‘right’ people. The location is Via Tortona is bigger and stunning: plants everywhere, warm shades and other details make it the ideal place for a night out with friends or your boyfriend.
If you don’t exaggerate with the cocktails (as I always do), you can have dinner and a gin tonic and only spend 25 euros. Of course, if you get carried away, the bill can get steeper. It is almost always worth it though!
