Are you in the mood for some Mexican food? We tried one of the most talked about places of the moment, Canteen “Mexican Kitchen and Tequila Bar”, which opened recently in the 22 Marzo area and whose specialties arrive straight from central America! With its magical atmosphere and its vertical garden, it’s a true beauty to see and a great place for dinner or for an aperitivo! Read on to find out more about our experience!
At Canteen the menu is varied with offerings from the mythical guacamole (try it, you’ll thank me later!) to the fish ceviche to tacos, soft corn shells filled with meat, fish – cooked and raw – or vegetables. Then there are the “platos fuertes”, including the chicken bites in coconut milk, the vegetable burritos and marinated porgie in a chili guajillo sauce. We suggest you begin your dinner with an appetizer like guacamole served with corn chips – we tried it and we fell in love – or with the typical “queso fundido”, a dish of melted Mexican cheeses, chili and chorizo.
After the appetizers (and the complementary nachos served with spicy sauce), you’ll have to decide whether to try one of the “platos fuertes” and, given the abundant portions, risk being left with no appetite for dessert, or opt for the ceviches or tacos. We chose two ceviches, the salmon one – with avocado, lime and sesame- and a porgie one – with mango, tomato, red onion and coriander. We really enjoyed both: the ingredients were well balanced and as a result the dishes were fresh and flavourful. We also liked how they served the same dish in different ways: the salmon ceviche was served on a crunchy corn waffle, whereas the porgie ceviche was served in a little glass jar with corn chips.
We also ordered the red tuna tartare tacos with guacamole and lime, which were truly delicious, and some fried plantain as a side dish.
To end our meal on a sweet note, we opted for a mango mousse, which was very creamy and not overpowering.
We suggest you enjoy your meal alongside a drink: the specialities of the house are tequila and margaritas!
The food is good at Canteen, but the real highlight is the ambiance. The restaurant has an outdoor space, filled with plants and surrounded by a large and impressive vertical garden and an indoor space, with exposed brick walls, big chandeliers and wooden tables. Inside the restaurant you’ll also find the famous Tequila Bar with an alabaster counter where you can enjoy a drink with a few pre-dinner bites as of 6:00pm.
Canteen is located at 10 via Archimede, close to corso 22 Marzo. You can get to the restaurant by car, or via public transportation: the stop for trams 9 and 23 (Viale Premuda) is located two feet from the restaurant!
For an appetizer, a ceviche or tacos and a dessert you’ll be spending between 30-35 euros, with the price increasing slightly if you choose one of the “platos fuertes” and opt to enjoy a cocktail with your meal. In our opinion, the bill is justified by the ambiance – super – and by the high quality of the food.
