After having been to the Mudec and having discovered Hangar Bicocca, I finally managed to visit the Gallerie d’Italia in Milan, located in Piazza della Scala just a short walk from the Duomo. Opened in 2011, this museum is funded by the Intesa San Paolo bank and is home to a rich collection of artwork from the nineteenth century, belonging to the Cariplo Foundation and Banca Intesa and all found in one wonderful setting. I recommend you make it a point to visit, not only on the occasion of some particularly interesting temporary exhibition (until March there was the famous ‘Kiss’ by Hayez), but also and above all to visit its enchanting rooms made of stucco, windows with views on the garden and crystal chandeliers!
WHAT YOU’LL FIND. In total, there are about 200 different artworks, all beautiful and, before the opening of the Gallerie d’Italia, available to the public only in the occasion of temporary exhibits. There are the plaster reliefs by Canova, Boccioni’s canvases, the paintings by Hayez, Segantini and Previati and different Lombard paintings from the nineteenth century.
FROM OUTSIDE. The Gallerie d’Italia are in front of La Scala, located close to the Duomo and the center of Milan, right at the exit of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. The museum is housed in the magnificent Palazzi Anguissola and Brentani: simply unique!
ON THE INSIDE. Believe me, the inside of the building is a real treat. Every angle unfolds into a different kind of magic, and that is without mentioning the internal courtyard full of sculptures, among which you can find different works by Giò Pomodoro. I was about to forget: near the coat check, on the bottom floor, it is possible to have a look at the vault of the historic Italian Commercial Bank!
THE COST. The cost of a regular ticket is 5 euros, whereas the reduced fee is 3 euros… Take my advice and stop by, maybe after (or before) a shopping trip at Excelsior. And for a gourmet stop in the area there’s an abundance of choice: paninis, pizza, Chinese dumplings, specialties from Naples or a glass of wine and a dish of cold cuts!
