There are restaurants in Milan that deserve the “historical” definition more than others. La Scaletta, in Piazzale di Porta Genova, is one of them. Right in front of the train station, inside a nice building, this restaurant has been active since the 70’s and it has even gained two Michelin stars. After a serie of ownership changes, the restaurant is now managed by a young team that makes La Scaletta a very welcoming and cozy place. Here are some details about food!
I tried La Scaletta on a Saturday evening, when the Navigli area is literally invaded and finding a private corner is very difficult. The atmosphere changes completely when you enter this restaurant: a dining room furnished with class, kind and helpful personnel, well arranged dishes. The menu offers both meat and fish options of the Italian cuisine and overall the first impression is great. We order two fish starters: a purple shrimps palette with radicchio and a seabass puff pastry with fois gras and artichokes seasoned with lemon. In both cases the flavours are delicate and the dishes are very well presented.
We continue with spaghetti with purple shrimps on a cream of burrata and mace powder: the pasta is boiled to perfection and the flavours of shrimps and burrata match fantastically. It is impossible to resist the temptation of ordering a second course: hesitant between the lentils burger and the suckling pig, we opt for the brill filet with purple shrimps on an eggplant basil flavoured cream.
Would you finish a dinner without ordering a dessert? Me…not!
To finish on a sweet note we indulge in a licorice cream with wild berries gelato, pistachios and meringues…a taste explosion!
We are right in Porta Genova, one of my favourite areas for both shopping and drinks. It is super easy to reach with public transport, the green metro stop is right there and several trams stop in front of the restaurant among which number 9 and 10, and you can have a walk to the new Darsena!
The atmosphere is one of the traits I appreciated more in this restaurant. I was with a friend I hadn’t seen in a while and the only thing we wanted was to have a chat in a pretty place with no rush. La Scaletta was the perfect place for that: tables are set fairly far from the others, optimal acoustics and, in general, an elegant atmosphere, with no frills…as cozy as at home!
For an all inclusive dinner at a Scaletta 50(ish) euros should be enough, a price that is within the Milanese average, especially in the Navigli area. Please note that you can have lunch at a more interesting price (15 euros for two courses of your choice with water and coffee included). I must try it again in summertime for a lunch en plein air when they set the garden too!
