Isola is one of my favourite areas in Milan. This district is full of nice restaurants and eateries: I already wrote about Café Gorille, my favourite, but also about two great fish restaurants, Il Marinaio and Il Pesciolone. Last Sunday I woke up late and I felt like having a mix of sweet and savory to eat. In the desperate seach for a brunch location (my favourite in Milan is the one at Ofelé in Via Savona), I tried Les Pommes in Via Pastrengo, a French style, or maybe more New York style, bistrot.
The very long opening hours (Les Pommes is open from the early morning until midnight, which already is pretty special) make it a perfect place to try for breakfast, lunch, dinner but also for brunch or an afternoon tea break. Brunch is only served on Sundays, from 11am to 3pm. Every chosen dish comes with a (freshly) squeezed orange juice, caffè americano, bread jam and butter and grilled corn on the cob.
You can choose between six main courses, burgers, beaten eggs, pancakes and more. We ordered a club sandwich with smoked salmon with french fries, lettuce, tomato and corn on the cob. The same side dishes came with the shrimp burger. The portions are generous, well-presented, maybe not very light, but overall very tasty.
We are right in the heart of Isola, in Via Pastrengo, where you can find other interesting places such as Capra e Cavoli, Anche Bar, The Botanical Club and Special. Take some time before or after the brunch for a walk in this district with your head up to enjoy the view of the skyscrapers and the high-rise buildings. Looking at the Bosco Verticale from here is astonishing!
Although it is said to be inspired by Parisian bistrots, in my opinion Les Pommes recalls New York eateries. The ambience is very pretty, maybe a little too dark (it is probably more impressive in the evening) but the overall atmosphere is very pleasant. Tables could be set further from eachother and service seemed a little bit ‘too young’, but always very kind.
For a brunch you will not possibly be able to spend less than 25 euros. A price that is matter of fact in line with Milan’s prices, but that still makes me turn up my nose. I must underline that elsewhere you could spend even more and quality could be not as good as here. So if you are in Isola at brunch time Les Pommes could be a good idea: especially if you want to feel like you are in NYC!
