We are all familiar with vegan food by now, but can we say the same about raw food? If you want to give a chance to this ‘movement’, you can try Mantra Raw Vegan in Milan’s Porta Venezia area, the first restaurant in Italy that combines vegan and raw. We wanted to go beyond any prejudice and, after praising their excellent matcha tea, we tried having dinner there too!
No meat and no animal derivatives and, most importantly, no cooked food: this is the concept at Mantra Raw Vegan, that offers plenty of veggies, fruit, seeds and vegetal oils and a lot of creativity. If the question that follows is “What is left to eat then?”, the answer is “Much more than you could expect!”.
We kicked our dinner right off with two starters: ‘Crack’, courgettes, walnuts and rosemary crackers, almonds and shiitake mushrooms and a ‘Tostavo’, an avocado toast with raw mixed seeds bread, smoked Pachino tomatoes, lemon flavoured fennel, herbs and edible flowers.
We followed with two seasonal first courses: the ‘Zpag Snip’, carrot spaghetti and saffron parsnip and orange with a sauce of raisins and oil with parsley and the ‘Tab’, a hemp tabbouleh, red turnip and pomegranate hummus, cumin crisps and oil with mint.
We were feeling fairly sated and fool but we couldn’t resist the ‘Cisfru’, a raspberry cheesecake with rose essence and Himalaya salt that has nothing to do with the classic cheesecake with cream cheese!
The dishes, in addition to having funny names, are colourful and very well presented, but they are most importantly a total surprise for what concerns flavours. The ingredients, which are not treated in any way, preserve their natural flavour that gets even intensified! Next time we will try other dishes that sounded intriguing, above all kelp spaghetti with curry, soups and calamari with mushrooms!
The restaurant is located in Via Panfilo Castaldi, behind Porta Venezia, and it is very easily reachable by the red metro line, tram n9 and several buses. So you can avoid looking for a parking spot for hours!
The interior is very minimal, neat and relaxing at Mantra Raw Vegan, and you can even have a peek at the preparations in the kitchen. The staff are extremely kind and available for giving you all the advice you can need: ask which herbal tea goes with your meal, it will warm your soul and intensify the flavours! The restaurant has also a mini market where you can purchase several types of food on tap, an endless variety of bottled juices and vegan and raw food themed books and leaflets!
The dishes were not the only thing that had our jaws drop, the bill did it too: 25 euros per head for the delicacies we have described. It is quite low considering the abundance of the portions, the attention that goes into preparing them and the specialty of the ingredients. So are you embrancing the raw food movement already?
