An oasis of peace in the middle of the Navigli? Impossible, some of you might say. Before experiencing it firsthand, I had a hard time believing it myself. Sometimes you just stumble upon a surprise, as I did with the discovery of this “secret” bar – or at least it was secret during the Fuorisalone, as it is now open to the public. Located at the very end of the vicolo dei Lavandai, Morgante has been open for just under two months now.
I hesitated for a while before going forward with this post: I knew that from the moment it was published it was possible that the peaceful atmosphere would give place to a louder one, and that I would have a hard time finding a spot. In the end, I decided it was worth sharing.
Before being converted into a bar, this space belonged to an art gallery. The surroundings are those of old Milan: low homes, plants, serene calmness and shingles on the floor. And lest we forget the small courtyards: aside from being beautiful on the inside, Morgante has a tiny yet stunning outdoor area, making it the perfect place to sip a cocktail on a warm summer night. The list of cocktails was created by a duo of mixologists and features sherry, vermouth, tequila and mezcal-based cocktails, but also classic favourites. With prices ranging between 10 and 20 euros, it isn’t cheap, but this is mainly because of the high quality of the spirits used.
We ordered a “gin tonic del vicolo” or “The Lane’s Gin and Tonic”, the “tonico del professore” or “Professor’s Tonic” and the “professione vacanze” or “Occupation: Vacation”. Cute names, and cocktails that met our expectations (even though you know where to find my favourite ones). Happy hour cocktails are served with a few snacks, but if you are seriously hungry, worry not: they have a kitchen and serve dishes including pastrami, risotto and Galician octopus well into the evening. Making your way there is simple: there are trams, buses or even Porta Genova metro station on the green line!
