January, the month of resolutions. There are those who sign up at the gym, those who try the umpteenth diet, those who try to quit bad habits. This is something common at the beginning of the year: you promise yourself that you will get to July with steel buns. But choosing the right gym can be as tricky as keeping the promise. And the same can be said with the type of activity: which one is the right for us? Outdoor running is a cure-all, but it is not always possible: there is smog, it often rains in Milan, you lack of parks, summer is too hot and winter is freezing. So what shall we do?
Today we talk about pilates, which I at the beginning approached by thinking “If the ladies in their fifties can do it, I can do it too”. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Pilates, when done properly, makes you discover muscles you had no idea you had. And it has the incredible capacity of toning, stretching, improving posture and, last but not least, relaxing your mind too.
In case you were wondering where to go, one of my favourite places is Studio 51: dedicated to physical wellbeing and sport in the heart of Milan, at a short walk from the red metro stops Conciliazione e Pagano. This studio was born, more than 10 years ago, as an ode to ‘slow fitness’, that is that type of movement that aims at improving the balance of a person in addition to her body getting in shape.
Pilates lessons are possible both in private form (with young and super knowledgeable personal trainers) and in small groups of 5 people max, each with their personal dedicated machine. Every training session lasts 55 minutes, always by reservation only.
Pilates, but not only. At its bright and comfortable location, Studio 51 also offers CoreAlign sessions, massages, osteopathy, physiotherapy, elastic taping and autogenic trainings. All the practices are perfect for fighting off Milan’s frenetic rhythms: the decontracting massage is among my favourites…a bomb!
