When I think of my favourite places in Milan I can not forget Signorvino where I often go for a good glass of wine with a view on the Duomo, after a shopping session at Excelsior, as an alternative to a good cocktail. I have so many reasons for choosing Signorvino: the first one being the fact that they answered my prayers to “Where do I go for a good aperitivo in the centre?”.
Let’s be honest, close to the Duomo it is very difficult to find a relaxing place without spending a fortune. In this case the place that makes it possible is a wine-bar, winery and bistro. Here is where I come around aperitivo hour to pop a bottle and admire the cathedral. With a plate of cold cuts, ça va sans dire.

At Signorvino, literally ‘Mr.Wine’, everything is about wine: here you can find more than 1000 labels divided per region, year and price. The shelves welcome popular labels and small producers with one point in common: the attention to quality and, most of all, territoriality. Furthermore their prices are there to prove you wrong if you are convinced that in Milan everything is expensive, especially in the city centre: most of the bottles are very affordable and they are sold with a minimum markup. And the price of the bottle you bring home is the same if you choose to drink it at Signorvino. I don’t know about you, but I get emotional if I get to drink a great bottle of wine for only 12 euros.
The approach is the same for the freshly made dishes: the menu is divided per regional specialties, simple and quality dishes with a strong local imprint. There are ‘pappa al pomodoro’ and ‘paccheri alla Norma’ and pizzoccheri too. For those wanting to snack on something simpler there are great salami and Italian cheese plates with bread and focaccia or delicious bruschettas.
Brick walls, big windows facing the Duomo, bottles everywhere: Signorvino has the soul of a winery, a sophisticated, well-lighted and cozy one. A very convenient winery, right in front of the red metro stop Duomo.
The atmosphere is definitively easy, and so is the clientele: there are tourists and residents looking for a relaxing evening. The only flaw is the personnel, that I have often found to be almost rude. They are almost all young guys, what would seem to be beginners on the job. A piece of advice? Make a reservation, especially at rush hour when it is always full and finding a free table might be difficult.
Prices are a strong point of Signorvino. Although you can find bottles that cost up to 1000 euros (important labels or historical years such as Biondi-Santi, Quintarelli and Sassicaia), the focus is on the affordable ones that vary between 10 and 15 euros.
Well, service aside, my love for Signorvino is undoubtable. Is it just a case that behind this winery there is the entrepreneur of Intimissimi, my favourite lingerie brand? Some call it a coincidence. For me this is a proof that when somebody is good at what they do, they do it well always whether there are bras and underwear or bottles of wine involved.
