Eating well in the center of a city is always a daunting task, even more so in Milan. Here is a tip for all of you looking for a spot for a special lunch or dinner with a view directly on the Duomo. Today I’m taking you to Spazio, the bistro of chef Niko Romito who earned 3 Michelin stars at his restaurant in Abruzzo… and you can taste them all in goodness (and not in price)!
The key to the menu at Spazio is to discover local dishes with a gourmet twist, thanks to the creativity of the young chefs from Niko Romito’s school. In the kitchen, in fact, the brigade studied under the chef, who runs the Reale di Castel di Sangro Restaurant (Aquila). That should suffice as a guarantee, but sometimes it doesn’t. At Spazio, on the other hand, we were positively surprised throughout the meal.
The menu is short and counts on five proposals for each moment of the meal: to start we chose the rumble fish, with herb mayonnaise and marinated lettuce and the seared yellowtail, parsley and roasted onion, both excellent. What truly made the difference in these dishes was mainly the cooking of the fish: perfect is an understatement.
Let’s begin with the round of first courses: scampi cappelletti, shellfish broth (sublime) and tarragon, and linguini with anchovies, peperoncino and broccoli. I can’t say which dish I liked the most, although the broth was truly incredible.
We then continued with the second courses: braised lamb, thyme and chickpea mayonnaise, steamed cod, escarole, olives and capers with cod milk and lemon and roasted cuttlefish with squid extract. Again, what left us ecstatic was the softness of the ingredients derived from the skillful cooking.
Quite satisfied at the end of our meal, we still decided to go for some dessert: passion fruit, bitter caramel, liquorice and balsamic vinegar (unfortunately served way too cold) and a good dessert with puff pastry, apple and creme.
Nonetheless, we liked the meal itself far better, and we suggest you insist on them more than on the sweet options.
Spazio is located on the third floor of the Mercato del Duomo, which I had already spoken about: it’s one of my favourite places in the center of Milan, whether it be for some quick groceries, a healthy lunch break, or to enjoy the Terrazza Aperol in the evening. But Spazio deserves a chapter of its own. It’s super easy to get to, with a stop on the red metro line located right in front.
The ambiance is wonderful, and comes off as elegant without being “over the top”. The best advice I can give you is to reserve a table only in the last room, the one which has a direct view on the Duomo and that has a wonderful tree (a real one!) right in the middle. If you have dinner here, you’ll steal your dining partner’s heart!
For the dinner described here (from the appetizer to dessert, enjoyed with a bottle of wine), we spent about 80 euros each. Considering that it was a special occasion and that we didn’t say “no” to anything, I estimate that 50/60 euros should do for a simpler meal. If we consider the attention to detail, the dreamy view and the attentive service, I consider the prices to be fair. What do you say, will you try it to believe it?
