It is a known fact that eating good fish without spending a fortune is not an easy task in Milan. I have my favourite hotspots where I enjoy a seaside feeling and eat great fish, as at Bistrot della Langosteria, but those are places I go to on special occasions.
It has been a long time that I have been looking for a restaurant with great fish but without emptying my wallet too much. Finally I have found what I was looking for at Trattoria il Marinaio in the Isola district, one of the neighborhoods that has been giving me more and more lately: here the offer is all about fish and sea food in the best Apulian tradition!
Let’s make it clear: if you are vegetarians or meat lovers, Marinaio is not the right place for you. But if you are crazy about fish you have to try it. There are not so many choices on the menu, but there were still enough to make my choice difficult. Among the starters I couldn’t resist some raw sea food and some scampi to die for! The menu offers many other great options (smoked sword fish or tuna carpaccio, tartare, octopus and mussels prepared according to three different recipes).
Among the first courses (sea food risotto, lobster fettuccine and clams and fish eggs paccheri) I opted for a dish that was not in the menu: a delicious (and very rich) pasta with scallops and shrimps.
Do not miss the lobster, au gratin, à la catalana, with exotic fruits, at the very competitive price of ten euros: have you ever heard of anything similar in Milan?
After having tried the lobster at the Lobster Bar at Rinascente, here I chose a grilled option: OMG!
We are in Isola, a district that is trending at the moment. I knew very little about it and I have been learning to appreciate it a lot lately. Parking is not difficult – if you choose public transport there are many choices with the metro (close by there is the yellow metro stop Zara, the green stop Garibaldi and the lilac Isola) – and reserving a table here can be a great excuse for discovering the neighborhood.
The restaurant has about 50 seats available, reason why booking a table is sometimes difficult. I suggest you go there for lunch, with no rush and you will find a not so full restaurant (and as a consequence not so noisy). It is small, but it is clean and smart and service is very kind and professional.
For a restaurant in Milan the final bill is fair. At lunch with some wine you will spend around 30 euros per head, even when ordering the most prestigious dishes, as raw fish and lobster. At the end with some sorbetto or liquor you will receive the receipt with few euros of discount: too good to be true, isn’t it?
