If you love the cuisine from the coastal region of Liguria, or if you’re simply feeling nostalgic for the sea, focaccia and basil, U Barba – a Ligurian-style tavern with a bowling green in the Piazzale Lodi area – is the place for you! We tried it and are here to tell you about our experience!
The menu isn’t very extensive and all dishes, from the appetizers to desserts, are typical of Ligurian cuisine. We suggest you begin your meal with an order of focaccia (we opted for the cheese one, Recco style, which was light and tasty) or an order of farinata and to continue your carb fest with one of the delicious first courses, the real specialty here. At U Barba you’ll find different kinds of pasta such as trofie, testaroli and pansotti, with classic pesto or in a nut sauce; we chose the super classic trofie al pesto, with green beans and potato, and we were particularly impressed! The pesto at U Barba is truly delicious: creamy, flavourful and fragrant, and is surely one of the best in the city!
After the focaccia and one of the abundant first courses you’ll most likely be feeling full and satisfied, but if a tiny space is left in your stomach (or your heart) for dessert, U Barba offers a selection of homemade desserts you can choose from, including the ring-shaped cake from Cinque Terre or the apple cake. We tried a slice (ok, a huge slice) of apple cake, served with gelato: while it was good, it wasn’t quite up to par with the pesto.
The wine selection at U Barba proposes a rather vast choice of wines from different Ligurian and Tuscan cellars. Beer lovers will find the historic Cervisia beer, a traditional beer from Genoa.
U Barba was born from the restoration of an old Milanese-style trattoria, from which the bowling green (still operating) and the vintage and rustic atmosphere remain. The restaurant is decorated like a typical Ligurian tavern: large wood tables, chairs and barstools in wrought iron, grey fabric curtains, light walls, basil plants and an outdoor space – with olive trees and a view on the bowling green– perfect for dinner on a warm summer night.
Although U Barba is a pretty big restaurant, I still suggest you reserve in advance, but, if you don’t manage to find a place, don’t despair! At lunchtime, you can order garnished focaccine and Italian-style scones to take away!
The restaurant is located along via Decembrio, two steps from Piazzale Lodi. You can get to U Barba by car (you should be able to find a few parking spots in the area), or by public transportation: on the yellow metro line or the 16 tram (Piazza Salgari stop).
For an appetizer, a first course, a dessert (we promise you’ll be satisfied after this!) and a glass of wine at U Barba, you’ll be spending around 30 euros, which may not seem like a tavern price but that is definitely justified by the quality and quantity of the food you’ll be served!
