10 Places for Live Jazz Music in Milan
It seems incredible, but when someone asks you “where can I go to listen to live music?” in Milan, it’s easy to find oneself without an answer. That’s partially because, with respect to other cities in the world, we don’t have as strong of a tradition with regards to live music, and also because there really aren’t that many places. Yet there are some, and we tried them for you. Here are 10 perfect places to listen to live jazz music, perhaps with a nice cocktail. Because as you know, no one can resist the smooth rhythm of jazz!
Those who come here define it as “a big family” and indeed this is the feeling that you get when you walk through the entrance of Bachelite, located in the Porta Vittoria area. Here, you’ll find a super relaxed and youthful atmosphere: come here to meet up with friends, enjoy a good mojito (the barman prepares his own version of it and it’s delicious!) and, above all, enjoy some good music. Whether it be a concert, a jam or simply a selection of vinyls playing, every night at Bachelite is an event worth attending!
BACHELITE CLAB. Via Vertoiba 3, Milan. +39 0245485399. Open everyday from 6:00pm to 2:00am.
LA BUCA DI SAN VINCENZO
In the Sant’Agostino area, the Buca (as those familiar with it have nicknamed it) isn’t your classic jazz club but is actually a meeting point for young and emerging voices of the Milanese jazz scene. A tiny place where you can enjoy a drink or a beer, and attend a concert every Monday and Thursday followed by an awesome jam session. Arrive early, otherwise you risk having to stay standing or, even worse, outside!
LA BUCA DI SAN VINCENZO. Via San Vincenzo 15, Milan. Open everyday (Monday-Friday 6:30pm-2:30am, Saturday-Sunday 9:00pm-2:30am).
The Bonaventura was born as a pub in the heart of Barona but, in very little time, has made a name for itself as one of the most popular jazz clubs in Milan. The ambiance is relaxing and friendly, the artisanal beer list is quite extensive, the menu is complete and, above all, the concerts are really high quality, making it the perfect place for jazz enthusiasts.

IL CIRCOLO MASADA
Since 2013, the Masada Cultural Association hosts the prestigious Jazz Club Milano, without a doubt the most active promoters of jazz music in Milan. The location is very impressive, as you arrive and go through a courtyard straight out of old Milan to arrive at a big loft with soft lighting, where you’ll find a long bar counter on the right, many seats and couches scattered around and the stage on the left. The evening dedicated to jazz is Sunday, but the Masada also offers a rich calendar full of art, literature, theatre and cultural meetings you can participate in by paying an annual fee of 10 euros.

Gianluca Soresi, a 43-year old Milanese with experience in the music industry defines his place as “a playroom for children who don’t want to grow up”. As you enter Vinile, it feels like you’re taking a walk down memory lane where the absolute protagonist is music. Between rare discs, old-fashioned radios, vintage decor and comic books, this place in the heart of the Porta Venezia area hosts some of the most in vogue musicians on the Milan music scene every week. What about a nice aperitivo while you treat your ears to some beautiful tunes?
VINILE. Via Tadino 17, Milan. +39 0236514233. Open Tuesday and Sunday from 6:30pm to 12:00am, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:30pm to 1:00am, Friday and Saturday from 6:30pm to 2:00am. Closed on Monday.
While it may appear like a simple brewery, John Barleycorn is a lot more than that. This place in the Gorla area presents itself as a simple pub with post-industrial furnishings, with over 50 different types of beer and a menu with hamburgers and steaks in true Irish style. In reality, as soon as you turn around everything changes setting, with a stage for live music and a soundproof glass window which overlooks a recording studio. Dining while witnessing an artist record, as you listen to another play live, is not something you witness everyday!
JOHN BARLEYCORN. Piazzetta Aristotele 14, Milan. +39 0247768770. Open everyday from 6:00pm to 2:00am.

This historic New York jazz club opened in Milan in 2003 and established itself right away as one of the must-see places for all connoisseurs of the genre. Although it is a bit commercial and touristy – especially in relation to the rather poor quality of the dishes offered by the restaurant – Blue Note makes up for it in terms of its music, with a program that is among the best around: every evening you can enjoy a concert by some of the most famous jazz artists in the world!

This is a great place to get a beer with friends before dinner, and you’ll likely find yourself tempted by the long list of tapas on the menu and special cocktails. The evening dedicated to jazz is Sunday, but there’s something different every night here, from traditional Milanese music to swing, blues and milonga.

What do you say, are there now enough places to choose from? In the meantime, we are continuing our research, and we’ve recently heard of two new places that have opened, which we have yet to try but that seem highly interesting: LUMe Jazz, a place of meeting, sharing and diffusion of jazz music especially among young people, where students from the Conservatorio and the Civica of Milan can perform in a vault from the 1500’s behind the State University, and JOY, a highly stylish new place in the Lambrate area dedicated to jazz that hosts concerts and jam sessions every Wednesday evening.
